Darren has been doing triathlon since 1996 when he did his first sprint race, apparently, in see through running shorts. He had a hiatus after the 2002 season due to a spinal cord injury after a clot formed and landed in a spinal cord artery, during a surgical procedure. This caused his left leg to be completely paralysed and he lost feeling in the right leg. He was told he would be lucky to walk again, let alone do another triathlon. So, like any normal person would do, he signed up for a half iron distance race as part of a fundraiser for the Challenged Athletes Foundation and finished in 8:20. He has since regained the use of most of his left leg, but it is still weak, mostly from the knee down. With the help of a carbon fibre brace, he was able to return to competitive triathlon.
Since 2004, he has completed Ironman Florida (2006) and Ironman Canada (2008), four 70.3 events, and over 100 other triathlons. Darren has represented Canada in two Paratriathlon World Championships and at the Cross Paratriathlon World Championships in Penticton last year. Darren’s love is racing off-road and races XTERRA events whenever he can. He has been XTERRA Regional Champion four times and XTERRA Canadian Champion once.
Darren has a chiropractic degree as well as a post graduate sports medicine degree. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Western States, teaching courses in advanced sports medicine in a master’s program. As a sports chiropractor, Darren has treated all types athletes from the weekend warrior to college, Olympic, and professional levels. He prefers being on the sidelines, helping athletes, to being in an office.
Darren has been using F2C products since 2014 and starts every day with mango Pharma-Greens, however, Pharma-Pure Chocolate/peanut butter/caramel flavour is quickly taking over as his favourite.
